Knowing your range is only half of it

Most people who think they "can't sing" are simply singing songs written for someone else's voice. If a chorus sits above your comfortable ceiling, transposing the arrangement can be more useful than forcing the note.

How does this find my vocal range?

It listens to your microphone and detects pitches from 75 to 1,050 Hz entirely inside your browser. It keeps the lowest and highest notes that remain stable for a short interval, then reports the distance between them in semitones and octaves. The stability check filters many brief noises, but it is not a clinical voice classification.

Is my voice uploaded or recorded?

No. The audio never leaves your computer. There is no upload, no recording saved, and no account needed. Closing the tab ends it, and the microphone is released the moment you press Stop.

What is a normal vocal range?

There is no single normal result. Comfortable range changes with training, health, warmup, register, and technique. Range also matters less than control: a smaller comfortable range is more useful than a wider result produced by strain.

How accurate is the voice type it suggests?

Treat it as a starting point. Real voice classification depends on tessitura (where your voice sits comfortably), timbre, and register transitions — not just the highest and lowest notes you can reach. Ranges for bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano overlap heavily, so this reports the closest fit rather than a verdict.

Why does it need a microphone?

There is no way to measure your voice without hearing it. Your browser will ask permission first, and you can revoke it at any time. Microphone access also requires a secure (https) connection, which is why this won't work over plain http.

Can I sing outside my range?

Do not strain to extend the result. The useful move is often to transpose the song into a comfortable key. I Can't Sing includes song-key controls for that workflow in the desktop app.
